Located on lake Traunsee, a picture postcard village with a history going back to Neolithic times - an ideal bike ride along the lake from the campsite at Camping Traunsee!
Traunkirchen has been inhabited for at least 3500 according to archaeological evidence and boards alongside the lake explain the locations where finds were made. It is located partially on a peninsula which protrudes into the lake at its narrowest point and which appears from a far like an island with a church perched on top. At its northern side there is a monastery which dates to 632 CE.although what we see today dates from later. For example, the baroque church dates to 1632 after the previous two churches were destroyed by fire.
There are various restaurants in the village, serving the local speciality - fish from the lake!
