Roots of biodiversity in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is the part of Italy that borders Slovenia and Austria in the north east of the country.  Mountains dominate much of the province although it has a coastline and the capital Trieste is a major port.  Friuli-Venezia Giulia has an area of 7,858 km² and about 1.2 million inhabitants. In English it is sometimes known as the Julian March.
