Ten centuries of Scottish history will be brought to life as part of a brand new event taking place next month.
Over the course of a weekend, Rock of Ages is set to transform Dumbarton Castle Rock and Pier Park below into a real life timeline, charting key periods from the last 1,000 years of Scottish history.
New for 2015, the event will see around 100 historical costumed performers and re-enactors from across the country take to the ancient stronghold on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June. Performers will depict key moments throughout history, from Viking visitors through the centuries right up until the Second World War.
From Viking longboats landing at Largs to the numerous sieges made on Dumbarton Castle itself, visitors will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the varied past of Dumbarton through a series of live performances and demonstrations. The event will also include demonstrations of traditional building crafts and skills, and stone workers based on site will portray both historical and modern day workers.
Lorna Ewan, Head of Visitor Experience, Content and Learning for Historic Scotland, said: “Rock of Ages is an exciting new addition to our summer events programme for 2015. Built on Volcanic rock and overlooking the Clyde, Dumbarton Castle will provide a spectacular backdrop for this first time event.
“Spanning more than 1,000 years of history, the event will allow visitors to discover the past through informative performances and demonstrations from multi-period historical characters – including Vikings, Medieval and Renaissance figures, and Covenanters. We’re grateful for the assistance of West Dunbartonshire Council, who have allowed us to use Pier Park for the occasion.
“Rock of Ages promises to be a great day out for all ages.”
Paul Neeson, Chair of the Dumbarton Castle Society, said:
“This event provides visitors with a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the history of Dumbarton Castle throughout the centuries, as well as the different historical events that took place on the West Coast, which it once guarded.
“I’m sure that it will be a great event which will be enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike and I am very much looking forward to seeing more than 1000 years of history being brought to life under the magnificent backdrop of the castle.”
